Subject: OASIS MEMBER NEWS: Software AG Announces Tamino 2.1
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SOFTWARE AG SHIPS TAMINO VERSION 2.1 Award-winning Native XML Database Enhanced for Even Better Performance SAN RAMON, Calif. - July 10, 2000 - Software AG, Inc. has begun shipping Tamino 2.1, a newly enhanced version if its native XML database. The upgraded offering provides many performance benefits, including improved querying, dynamic XSL processing, support for read-only databases and tighter security. Tamino 2.1 builds on the original version of Tamino, shipped November 1999, which was awarded "Best Software" and "Best of COMDEX" at COMDEX Asia in April 2000. "With only a few months on the market, Tamino has gained tremendous industry support as the world's first native XML information server," Dr. Helmut Wilke, president and CEO, Software AG Inc., explained. "Version 2.1 is a performance powerhouse that will only further Software AG as the leading XML contender." Upgrades in Tamino 2.1 include: **A query language based on X Path, the new W3C standard and successor to XQL, plus new filter technologies that help produce much more precise results. Finding individual elements of one or multiple XML documents using queries is now much easier. **Enhanced processing of dynamic XSL: users no longer need additional applications to convert XML documents to HTML or to display XML in a different format. **Data access directly from read-only media, accommodating users who want to prevent unauthorized modifications to their XML-format catalogs. Data can now be stored on a CD and then displayed on a different system rather than having to be imported to a database before it can be displayed. **Improved security mechanisms: users can now define authorizations for XML documents down to element level, making it possible to grant access rights for individual elements of a particular document. As a result, display formats and access rights for documents stored in Tamino can be optimized to meet the specific needs of various users and user groups. Availability and Pricing Tamino 2.1 is available immediately for Sun Microsystems' Solaris operating system. "Offering our XML database on one of the leading Unix platforms opens up huge market potential for Software AG," Wilke added. "Sun's version of Unix is among the most popular operating systems for servers worldwide." Tamino 2.1 for Windows NT and Windows 2000 will ship during third quarter 2000, with versions for Linux and SCO Unixware 7 following later in the year. Prices for Tamino 2.1 start at $40,000 per processor for Sun Solaris and $25,000 for the NT version. About Software AG, Inc.
