Subject: [announce] OASIS Member News: XyEnterprise's XML ProfessionalPublisher Automates Production of R. R. Bowker's Books In Print
XyEnterprise’s XML Professional Publisher Automates Production of R. R. Bowker's Books In Print* Production Time and Costs Reduced; Readability, Usefulness of Bibliographic Volumes Enhanced READING, MA - Oct. 29, 2002 - XyEnterprise, the leading developer of XML content management and enterprise publishing solutions, announced today that R.R. Bowker, a leading publisher of bibliographic information, selected and employed Version 7.1 of the XyEnterprise XML Professional Publisher (XPP) to produce the 2003 edition of R.R. Bowker’s flagship bibliographic resource, Books In Print*. Publishing the vast amount of information in the Books In Print database (which contains more than 3.5 million records) is a daunting task. Previous editions of the print version consisted of nine very large physical volumes, each containing nearly 3000 pages. For the 2003 edition, Bowker wanted to speed up production, reduce the number of volumes published, and increase the accessibility and usefulness of the information to end users. “We wanted to move to a way of producing Books In Print where we could extract the records listed by title from the database, compose the pages of the “title” volumes, and then produce the corresponding “author” volumes with cross-references to titles,” says Gordon MacPherson, Production Director at R.R. Bowker. “At the same time, it was critical that we be able to process the huge volume of data quickly and efficiently.” Bowker selected XyEnterprise’s XPP in large part for its ability to extract cross-reference information from one document and construct a new document with that information displayed in sorted form. This capability of the XPP application, called CITI, is the way tables of contents and indexes are constructed in more ordinary documents. Using information extracted from the Books In Print database, XPP first composed the “title” volumes, and then CITI component extracted the data needed to create the “author” listings, complete with full references to the pages on which the author listings are found in the title volumes. MacPherson says that XPP has helped Bowker meet all of its goals for the 2003 edition of Books in Print. The number of volumes was reduced from nine to eight, which translates into significant costs savings in production. Processing time also decreased enormously - what had previously taken three to four weeks was accomplished via CITI in a matter of days. And for end users, the specific page references to the title entries in the author volumes are a huge benefit for cross-referencing between volumes. “We have found a strong technology partner in XyEnterprise” says MacPherson. “XPP has proven to be scalable, robust and flexible, and will continue to be a publishing workhorse we rely upon.” Learn more about XPP and how industry leaders are using XPP software to solve XML and enterprise publishing challenges at XyEnterprise’s free Webinar, “XML to PDF Autopublishing: A Business Case Study Review” presented on Wednesday November 6 at 2 PM Eastern. Jon Parsons of XyEnterprise will highlight the business payback achieved by XPP customers in markets ranging from technical documentation, journals and periodicals, automotive, and legal publishing.
