Subject: Second International Topic Maps Users Conference in April 2008
[The following message is
sent on behalf of the organizers of Topic Maps 2008] Topic Maps 2008 April 2-4 2008 ......................... OASIS is co-sponsoring Topic Maps 2008, the Second
International Topic Maps Users Conference, which takes place in "Subject-centric computing" is a new way of
thinking about how we organize information. Building on traditions and insights
accumulated over the centuries, it represents a paradigm shift in how we use computers
to manage information and knowledge. The basic idea is simple: information should not be
organized according to where it resides or how it was created, but what it is about.
Organize information *by subject* and it will be easier to integrate, reuse and
share – and (not least) easier for users to find. The increased
awareness of the importance of metadata and ontologies, the popularity of
tagging, and a growing interest in semantic interoperability are part and
parcel of the new trend towards subject-centric computing. This conference brings together these disparate threads by
focusing on an open international standard that is subject-centric to its very core:
ISO 13250 Topic Maps. Topic Maps complements XML vocabularies like DITA, UBL
and ebXML by providing the ability to express semantic commonalities and merge
information that conforms to disparate models and vocabularies. Topic Maps 2008 offers a choice of twelve tutorials and over
30 presentations that focus on the practical application of Topic Maps in
fields such as information integration, product documentation, knowledge
management, enterprise architecture, e-learning, e-government, digital
libraries, and cultural heritage. Keynote speakers are David Weinberger, Alex
Wright and Steve Pepper, and the closing panel discussion also features OASIS
board member Peter Brown. Join us in Oslo for three days of tutorials, case studies,
technical discussions and exhibitions to learn how Topic Maps and the vision of
subject-centric computing is being applied around the world to solve problems
of information and knowledge management. For more information: http://www.topicmaps.com/tm2008 |
