Subject: CGZ - My $0.02 worth
Hi all, I've finally found the time to read the entire CGZ thread in the W3C WG beginning with Benoit's initial question, http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-webcgm-wg/2008Oct/0020.html and ending with Dave's last response. http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-webcgm-wg/2008Nov/0022.html I agree with the points Lofton made and the conclusion, http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-webcgm-wg/2008Nov/0020.html but I wanted to add a couple of things that weren't mentioned in the discussion. In particular, Dieter asked if this was legal, http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-webcgm-wg/2008Nov/0018.html and Lofton responded. http://lists.w3.org/Archives/Public/public-webcgm-wg/2008Nov/0021.html I think the CGM standard gives a more complete answer than Lofton's. Section 9.5.2.11 of CGM99 reads as follows: 9.5.2.11 Physical media Physical file format and other issues of media, delivery, or networking are beyond the scope of ISO/IEC 8632 and shall not be specified by profiles of ISO/IEC 8632. These issues may however be important for successful interoperability and if addressed by the application commmunity (sic), shall be addressed in specifications other than the profiles. I think this is clearly a case of "physical file format," so 9.5.2.11 applies. I also draw a distinction between the WebCGM Profile and the WebCGM Recommendation. The former is a subset of the latter. It was Chapter 4 in the WebCGM 1.0 Recommendation, and it is Chapter 6 in the WebCGM 2.0 Recommendation / OASIS Standard. Therefore, I think the normative definition of CGZ should be removed from T.13.1 in section 6.2 (the WebCGM Profile). Obviously then, it needs to be added someplace else to the WebCGM specification. I think Chapter 7 is the logical place since it is imposing an additional conformance requirement above and beyond the WebCGM profile itself. Nobody mentioned the issue of MIME media type. Does CGZ need to be registered as a MIME media type? Again, this is just my two pennies worth. Rob
