Thanks for putting this on paper. I think this would be good to get in the spec. I also think it can be done in a way without creating a new optional behavior and thus expose this information to the client if it is available on the server. I do have a couple of comments: :)

1. I'd like to remove the preview relationship type and express as a service (getPreviews) that returns an XML structure with the information
This allows the repository flexibility to implement in a variety of ways. The only thing that is lost is the ability to search for documents with a certain preview. I think that is okay since that is not the intent of the proposal. Of course, repositories are permitted (if they chose) to expose and implement via a relationship.

2. I'd use 'alternate' instead of 'preview' as a link relation
You can specify the mime/type

3. I would add in a notion of icon at the type and object level
I would probably use an uri property (cmis:icon) on the object level and leave it repository specific whether it is searchable. on the type definition I would add an URI field for the icon.

Dear all,

A while back, I floated the idea of supporting document thumbnails in  
CMIS. There was some interest via mail and also at the recent  
PlugFest. It was suggested to put forward a proposal, which I have  
done in the following document.

Any comments appreciated. Personally, I'd like to see support for  
document thumbnails in the first version of the CMIS specification.
