Hi, Martin. You can think of the "ditabase" DTD as a container for one or more topics of mixed type, such as having task and reference in one file, either peer or nested. The map is not a topic, but rather a navigator that associates topics. So typically you would author topics under one of the standalone DTDs (concept, task, or reference), or, whenever you need to manage multiple topics of different types, ditabase.dtd. You author the map separately to indicate the collections of topics for a build. But the map is orthogonal to the topic--one does not contain the other, so there is no point to binding map and topic within the same high level doctype of the ditabase DTD--the processing is not at all the same.
