The phrase "platform runtime binary"
on the page about setting up Eclipse help as a standalone application (http://help.eclipse.org/galileo/topic/org.eclipse.platform.doc.isv/guide/ua_help_setup_standalone.htm)
doesn't line up well with anything on the initial downloads pages, so I
understand the frustration.  It does take some digging.

From the Eclipse downloads page (http://eclipse.org/downloads/
), click the Projects tab, look under "Eclipse Project", and
the last entry is "Eclipse Platform".   You can click "Eclipse
Project" or the Eclipse Platform link; they go to the same downloads
page for the core Eclipse Project.  On the Eclipse Projects downloads
page, you'll pick the release you want  (latest release, near the
top, is a safe choice), which then takes you to the holy grail.

On the Release Build page, notice that
you have several options, depending on what you want from the Eclipse Project.
 Scroll about halfway down the page, and finally we see a section
named Platform Runtime Binary.  Choose your download based on your
OS.

According to the definitions page (reached
by clicking the + next to the section title): 
"Platform Runtime Binary:  These
drops contain only the Eclipse Platform with user documentation and no
source and no programmer documentation. The Java development tools and
Plug-in Development Environment are NOT included. You can use these drops
to help you package your tool plug-ins for redistribution when you don't
want to ship the entire SDK."

Note that you can also start from an
SDK and create an instance of Eclipse that only contains the plugins needed
to run the help as a stand-alone application; see the instructions at the
bottom of the "Standalone help" page (in the section entitled
"[Optional] Installing a minimal stand-alone help system").

I'm not sure I want to provide a full
set of installation instructions in the Guide; do we do this for any of
the other technologies?

Hi everyone

In one of my consultancy jobs, the client wants to use Eclipse Help as
a
standalone (ie, not related to an Eclipse application) Web delivery option.
However, they have found it difficult to set up the necessary Eclipse
runtimes. To be more specific, it seems to be quite difficult for someone
not intimately familiar with the Eclipse environment to work out what needs
to be installed. As an example, it seems that you may have to download
and
install the "Platform Runtime Binary"... what the Dickens does
that mean? 

In the Help Technologies Guide, Jeff Antley has written a very useful
overview of Eclipse Help and the CS plug-in, but I'm wondering if we need
to
go further, and provide clear installation instructions. Perhaps we also
need to put together a minimum Eclipse setup for supporting Help. Unless
this has already been done, in which case we could point to it.

I think Stan has encountered some similar difficulties. What does everyone
think about this issue? Jeff, do you have any advice or suggestions?
