1) Roll-call, welcome, and introduction of new members or observers
a) update on new member contacts

2) Review of top-level goal
"Develop a general top-level design for structured, intent-based authoring of learning content with good learning architecture, following DITA principles and best practices."

3) Status on Task 1: "Review of structured designs for learning and how to apply DITA principles and best practices." 

4) Presentation and discussion - IBM specializations and DB2 pilot, John Hunt & Bob Bernard

5) Review and discussion about learning objects in general and Cisco model in particular.

6) Meeting planning status.
From last week's minutes:
John Hunt and Bob Bernard to present IBM pilot
JoAnn - will try to bring in Chuck Barritt or other Cisco expert
Scott - may try to bring in Bill Young, John may also be able to bring in Tyde Richards as well to discuss SCORM? Starting on the 9/14, with tide on the 9/21.
Possibly bring in Erik Hennum or other expert on QTI?

Other potential subjects:
The typical use of PowerPoint slides in training. How could DITA Learning content address or provide an alternative? Possibly bring in professional instructional designers?
Potentially partner with eLearning Guild advisory board to bring in those experts

Minutes 7 September 2006

1. Roll call

call for second secretary as backup

Welcome Paul Barley as new member! Paul is an education and training developer at IBM for the Rational software product.

Guest: Heidi Fisk, from the eLearning Guild,
an online global community of practice for eLearning (over 20,000 members)
looking to see if there are ways to help each other

Guest: Bill Young, from Flatirons Solutions. Bill has a background in learning content and is looking to become a regular member!

2. Review of top-level goal

3. Status of task 1: begin with review of IBM specializations

4. John led the presentation and discussion of IBM specializations and DB2 pilot (slides available on OASIS site).
JoAnn suggested that topics are more equivalent to RIO (Reusable Information Objects). The RLO is already an aggregate of RIOs.
concept, procedure, fact, process, guideline?
RLO can be combined into different course deliverables

Bruce - it would be important to discuss what levels we are talking about developing specializations for.

Paul - Authors are used to defining material in context of the course they have created. It may be difficult to get creators to look at creating
objects from the RIO level (topic level), when they are used to creating content at a course level.

JoAnn - previous experience that it is easier to re-use task types of topics.

perhaps create a separate topic for data (sample content for exercises, etc.) This would be specialized off of reference?

Extending DITA to support learning content through: 
DITA topic types for learning - Describe lesson overviews and objectives, summaries, exercises, assessments
DITA map domain for learning - Organizes collections of DITA topics for assembly and delivery as a learning course
DITA content domain for learning - Describes specific content vocabularies that support learning, such as an instructor note.
DITA process model for learning - Puts together all the pieces for designing, developing, and delivering learning content with DITA.

learningBase is essentially equivalent to RLO
learningTopic is essentially equivalent to a RIO

In the IBM pilot, each component in learningBase is a specialization of that base.

The IBM pilot did not get to the level of specializing a map, but certainly would be appropriate.

Bruce - Microsoft eLearning has Lessons equivalent to Module. Lucent would probably need the same levels of hierarchy (Course, Unit, Module, Topic)
Scott - also seen these levels at other clients and would recommend those levels (Course, Module, Lesson, RIO)

ACTION: JoAnn - may be able to bring in Microsoft contact to discuss their model. JoAnn to contact potential guests.

ACTION: John to send issues for DITA and Learning content to the mail list to generate further discussion.

6. Next meeting (Sept.14): discuss difference in approach to the Cisco model and work throught the Cisco whitepaper.

Scott sends regrets for next week. Backup secretary will be needed!
