Subject: Groups - DITA Learning Content SC Meeting modified

DITA Learning Content SC Meeting minutes 21 Sep 2006

 -- Scott Hudson

DITA Learning Content SC Meeting has been modified by Scott Hudson

Date: Thursday, 21 September 2006
Time: 11:00am - 12:00pm ET

Event Description:
USA Toll Free Number: 866-880-0098
USA Toll Number: +1-210-795-1100
PASSCODE: 6396088
Go to http://www.mymeetings.com/audioconferencing/globalAccessFAQ.php for information on specific country access dialing.

Agenda:
1) Roll-call, welcome, and introduction of new members or observers

2) Review and approval of the minutes.

3) Review of top-level goal
"Develop a general top-level design for structured, intent-based authoring of learning content with good learning architecture, following DITA principles and best practices."

4) Status on Task 1: "Review of structured designs for learning and how to apply DITA principles and best practices."

5) Presentation and discussion -
a) Paul Barley to lead a discussion of terms for learning objects and how to correlate with DITA. See http://www.oasis-open.org/apps/org/workgroup/dita-learningspec/document.php?document_id=20331
b) Initial discussion and planning for how to approach SCORM. For some starting points and links, see -
http://www.oasis-open.org/apps/org/workgroup/dita-learningspec/email/archives/200609/msg00010.html

6) Meeting planning status.
9/28 - Tyde Richards of EduWorks and the IEEE Learning Technology Standards Committee, and with a long involvement in learning standards and SCORM, will join us for our telecon on 9/28 and help us make some sense of all this in relation to structured content for learning.

Scott - may try to bring in Bill Young.
No response from email to Ruth Clark.

7) Adjourn

Minutes:
Roll call

Need to address the voting member list. (didnt make quorum with Scott absent last week)

2) Fred Elsner should be listed as Documentation and Training development manager.
Minutes for last week have been accepted and approved with the included change.

5) Presentation and discussion -
a) Paul Barley lead a discussion of terms for learning objects and how to correlate with DITA. See http://www.oasis-open.org/apps/org/workgroup/dita-learningspec/document.php?document_id=20331

Ciscos new learning object strategy now refers to RLO as a Lesson, and RIO as Topic. They have determined 5 types of topics: Concept, Fact, Procedure, Process, Principle.

Paul has mapped Ciscos model to DITA and IBM Rationals learning strategy. Other member organizations are encouraged to add their mappings to this spreadsheet as a helpful comparison.

Other orgs likely have similar structures, but different terms, so we should be able to have a pretty complete mapping. Any additions would be interesting to note.

Assessment is listed in red, as that still needs to be addressed.

Bruce: For Lucent, there may need to be an intermediate level (possibly module?) needed to organize large numbers of lessons. It may be necessary to provide more structure around modules.

Cisco also has a reference to sub-topics, to provide another level of granularity.

DITA accommodates some of this in sections within topics. (although they cannot be nested).

There has been some discussion on the DITA lists as to the need for sub-topics. If a topic is too large, it may not be as reusable, and it would need to be broken into smaller units. The recommendation was to only go down one level of subtopic, as some implementations may not support arbitrary nestings.

We might consider adding another level between lesson and topic.

Amber: in Rational, each tutorial contained modules that contained topics in the spreadsheet. It might be interesting to hear from folks on that team that created their specialization.

Other examples would be helpful!

Perhaps add a level of map for courses to be bundled into curriculums.

It is likely that Assessments should be an additional specialization. Are assessments appropriate at the lowest topic level? Could a lesson level assessment be assembled from the lower level topics?

An assessment could be used at the start of a course to determine which modules should be presented.

SCORM also has some specifics regarding assessments before and after a content or module.

What about pre-conditions / pre-requisites?

b) Initial discussion and planning for how to approach SCORM. For some starting points and links, see -
http://www.oasis-open.org/apps/org/workgroup/dita-learningspec/email/archives/200609/msg00010.html

EduWorks site has a number of interesting pages concerning SCORM concepts.

SCORM is a packaging model that provides a standard model for Learning Management Systems (LMS) to be able to process SCORM components from different authors or companies.

Most of SCORM will be based on what is produced from a packaging transform. We need to determine what elements/attributes will be needed on the DITA side to support the proper creation of the manifest that is SCORM compliant.

What about delivery of content to a non-SCORM mode? Since we can encode this content in the more neutral DITA structures, we should be able to provide for both SCORM and non-SCORM output modes.

Bruce: We should be able to specify not only the content, but perhaps some of the interactivity or sequencing activities that can be determined by the author.

John: Sequencing should be able to be supported, as there is a sequencing standard that should be able to be included into the SCORM-compliant package. This is where we need to add to the DITA specialization, as to what sequencing information will be needed.

Same situation for assessments (QTI?).

Members should review the SCORM in Practice presentation prior to next weeks meeting.

The Activity Tree provides an approach to sequencing.

Scott: move to promote all current members to Voting Member status.
John seconded and the motion was carried. There should be several new voting members
next week!
