Bruce - we could start with some very generic content to start working these out. b) Greg DeVore - Blue Mango GE Voluson-i Training Example See http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/dita-learningspec/200611/msg00020.html Based on a SQL db, but similar to DITA concepts. They are looking at moving this to DITA. All lesson modules are between 5 and 10 minutes, and are task-based. If there is a high detail lesson, then they will constrain the scope to keep to the time limits. There will always be a way to drill down to get more info. There is a hierarchical breadcrumb structure to allow users to dig down to more detail, while also being able to return to the parent lesson. Potentially have maps for the sequencing, and then reltables to address related topic (deeper dives). The challenge is in creating a different set of lessons to customize a subset. It would make more sense to use related links in a topic for related content dependencies. This system is really a filtering mechanism to help them choose which content they want to bundle into a lesson. What about a DITA map with all of the content in it, then have a separate interface or stylesheet to provide the filtering for what modules should be produced/visible? Larger curriculum map could be used along with specific lesson or module maps. Default processing with DITA-OT today is that each topic generates a separate page. The bluemango system breaks topics into smaller chunks based on the size of individual content pages. This could still be achieved by creating each page as a nested topic in a larger topic. One of the key components will be in making sure context is preserved with each topic. Lesson could be a topic, and individual screens would be learning objectives? Content developers literally create the content pages, and then drag and drop to create the lessons. The task has been displayed one step at a time in the Training Editor. There is the option to display an entire topic on one screen, or to break each step into a separate screen. This appears to be a styling issue, rather than having to break each into separate topics? Will probably divisions within a single topic. Perhaps some of this content could be used as our sample content? Greg will post content to the list, assuming there are no rights issues to have to work through. Lessons are a combination of supertopics and individual tasks. Maps seem to be the best approach to lessons, able to reference individual topics as needed and in multiple contexts. Supplemental comments provided by Bruce Esrig: Blue Mango offers packages of short, self-paced multimedia lessons. Greg demonstrated Blue Mango's: - lesson viewer - lesson manager feature The lesson viewer has a lesson library view that groups the lessons into curriculum groups. When viewing a curriculum group, the content page displays the lessons in the group. In the sample, there were roughly 12 curriculum groups with a maximum of roughly 12 lessons per group. A lesson has a two-level structure: steps that contain substeps. A substep corresponds to a DITA topic. In the page view, all the content for the lesson is in the left content pane. The right content subpane shows the key graphic from the current substep. The lesson manager permits the user to create new curriculum groups. A curriculum group consists of one or more lessons selected from the curriculum groups that the user already has access to. Within a package of lessons, references may be inserted at the substep level (DITA topic) to other relevant lessons. This is similar to the capability in a DITA map to specify relationships among the topics collected by the map. In DITA, a topic relationship can be added to a topic by specifying a relationship within the map. It is also possible to hard-code a relationship between topics within the topic, when it is known that the two topics will always be packaged together. When a curriculum group is created, a small amount of packaging is added without any cues in the source. For example, at the end of a sequence of lessons that form a curriculum group, Blue Mango adds a reference link to the library view that shows the list of curriculum groups. 3) Next meeting Jan 4, 2007 4) Close and adjourn.
