Dear DITA learning and training content
specialization sub-committee -
On Tuesday and Wednesday of last week
(April 10-11, 2007), a group of about 60 instructional designers, content
developers, and others involved in creating and delivering learning and
training content convene at the Advanced Distributed Learning (ADL) co-lab
in Alexandria, VA for a "S1000D-DITA Training and Learning Subcommittee
Summit."
The following members of the DITA learning
and training content SC attended: Greg DeVore, Rob Frankland, Robin Sloan,
Wayne Gafford, and John Hunt.
This was a very successful and productive
event. My thanks go out to Wayne Gafford and Tim Tate of the ADL for all
the work they and the ADL staff did to organize and host this event.
For details about the summit, including
the participant list, presentations, and workgroup feedback, see http://adlcommunity.net/course/view.php?id=24.
For my summaries of the feedback on
each of the six learning topic types, follow the links in the OASIS DITA
learning SC wiki -
http://wiki.oasis-open.org/dita/LearningSubcommittee.
Much of the audience came from the US
Department of Defense training and instructional design communities. They
develop and deliver training for submarine missile systems, officers training
and certifications for the Navy, tank weapons systems, and such. An additional
group of attendees came from the more general learning and training development
communities. Many reported attending the summit specifically to learn and
hear more about DITA.
Companies and organizations represented
included: Lockheed Martin, Boeing, Raytheon, Northrop Grumman, IBM, U.S.
Navy Submarine Learning Center, UNITECH, IDSI, OutStart, PTC/Arbortext,
SAIC, D.P. Associates, Avaya, AMSEC, ADL, Progeny Systems Corporation,
Imedia.it, Eduworks, Blue Mango Learning Systems, Delex, and Learnitech.
The DITA message resonated strongly
with just about everyone in attendance:
- start small
- build up through specialization
- address the complex needs of today's
world of component-based solution content deliverables
With few exceptions, participants agreed
on the value of structured XML content for learning and training.
For the bulk of the two days, summit
participants divided into five working groups, where they reviewed the
phased design plan for DITA learning content. Each group rated each of
the six DITA learning topic types, and provided detailed input on the design
outlines.
- The Overview and Summary types were
rated as either "exact match" or "has significant relationship,"
with few changes suggested to the design outlines.
- The Assessment design was also seen
as a good fit, with the main comment not to restrict interactions to QTI.
- There was considerable discussion about
Content and the relationship with Enhancement, with the suggestion to consider
either a) merging the two topic types, or b) splitting them into multiple
distinct types, in order to accommodate a wider variety of content.
- Also, since both Content and Enhancement
may represent primary learning content, don't relegate one of them to secondary
status.
- There was also considerable discussion
about the Instructional Design type, with a suggestion to consider re-naming
it to "Lesson Planning topic, " re-folding the design outline,
and making it clear that this content does not get delivered to the learner.
I look forward to further discussion
about the detailed feedback on each type, revising our working design outlines,
and developing out the working specialized DITA DTD and schemas needed
to test these content designs against sample content.
John
