john: the split up the spec problem: distribute with dita 1.2 including the specializations as a large submission?
stan: dita is expanding. lots of overhead, however. lots of campaigning. considering adjunct spec lead to approval fatigue. sentiment is: package it up for smaller chunking.
wayne: don't wind up like a large s1 spec if we know that dita will expand.
john: several strategies. invite everyone to review the minutes on the main tc page. 1.2 will be an entire package review, then later package "pluggable inclusions". core dita in one, including core domains and topic. new contributions for learning might yield separate review cycles.
stan: growth will be big. spec will be a bloated monster. must address all concepts: the specializations, the dita lite...address a longterm organizational roadmap. 2.0 longer term issues will be handled (most likely) in 2.0.
john: request subcommittee make recommendation for approval process: tc approval with other main spec or separate? look to main tc list on approval topics. meetings are on tuesdays.
john: another update with bill blackmon on the adl staff. develop out dita map to scorm manifest using templates. recommendation is to use template 4 and 6. will track pre and post objectives. give a demo next week.
john: over to wayne on the faq.
wayne: last faq discussion focused on intended audience. intended audience will shape faq as a means to garner acceptance. must now begin to fill-in nontechnical faq subjects.
chaves: in the process of selling dita to technical and 40 content developers on staff inside ibm global consulting services. they want to know how will it.
rueben: what is dita going to do for me?
chaves: list the benefits...then they become questions. worried about different audiances. adoption will be challenging. upper management will ask? what will be the benefit? better consistancy?
wayne: better inventory management of data by virtue of using metadata to tie data to developers, other content and items they document.
john: maybe take the original dita faq and rephrase to tailor for learning specialization.
wayne: how can the orig dita faq be rephrased for non-tech?
john: what are the benefits learning spec generally? (four bullets).
wayne - benefit to ids...chunking data to better fit scorm. questions related to content planning and development:
rueben: can i use my current tools to use dita?
stan: what are the migration issues? how does my legacy data fill into dita? tools and conversion.
robin: have migrated data, but all new projects are new data. tech pubs are moving from docbook to dita. moving from book to topic based. can't tell what a task, concept or reference is in a book. prepocessed metadata by hand. level of granularity was difficult. rules did not always apply to all cases. conversion routine built a map that corresponds to a chunked topic.
john: fundamental problem depends on existing content. difficult to start with a cp. better to start with an anlysis of how data was developed to begin with.
robin: good point. all original learning data was in powerpoint. hand many duplicate versions. could not propigate changes.
wayne: we have an outline. lets get volunteers for faq development. we'll draft out questions and answers over the next month and review progress at the feb 28 telcon. faq subject content delegated as follows:
