Subcommittee Reports
Help Subcommittee:
Stan gave an overview: the SC continues to make progress on help issues. The current focus is on taking concepts they've worked on and mapping them into 1.3 features, especially the ones owned/championed by the SC, then creating a bunch of white papers on them, more adoption related. They've looked at their 'help technologies guide', and started to repurpose that material into white papers and assign writers. Plug: the SC meets every other week, and all folks are welcome.

Announcements

Business
========
1. DITA 1.3 progress
- Redesign of "Contains and Contains by" (Anderson)
Robert; thanks for comments last week; I'm continuing to tinker with it; the contains/contained-by (c/c-b) links volume had 'exploded' to 97Kb for the L&T spec, which is pretty much a superset of all the others. 2 main points:
1. Now using the re-design suggested by John Hunt last year; i.e., c/c-b table for 'base' lists elements, but for all specializations, just says 'everything in base plus these [unique] elements'. uncompressed version with all our links is still pretty big, but without the links (using redesign), its 4-5 MB.
2. one suggestion last week was 'we could rebuild it with diff. keys pointing at HTML'; that doesn't work with the current re-design. Currently, the c/c-b appendices are generated with one reference topic per letter; links for each element are generated by a sub-key (app-name/element-name). That method is only valid when linking to DITA topics; if we make it to an HTML page, that keyref becomes invalid.
- Eliot; we've only defined that for addressing DITA resources.
- Robert; exactly
- Eliot; but the xref is actually from DITA-source to DITA source, it's a function of the output processor to construct a link to both PDF and HTML.
- Robert; right, so it requires some extra stuff to process, and we'd also be adding 500 extra TOC entries, plus defining 500 extra keys. the management of 500 more keys to map is too much overhead.
- Eliot; but it shouldn't actually add processing time...
- Robert; no, it shouldn't, but it's still too much maintenance
- Kris; right, people - i.e. especially vendors - take this and re-publish it; processing has to be managable and portable.
- Eliot; we could keep the entries out of the TOC by putting them in TOC groups with toc="no".
- Robert; but it's still ugly, and I still want to condense these into one file per letter.
- Eliot; what about having a root topic as letter, and subtopic as element?
- Robert; we do want letters showing up in the TOC, just not elements themselves.
Also, what does it mean when ou have a keyref that is meant to go outside DITA?
Currently that's an error.
- Eliot; really, the right solution is cross-deliverable linking.
- Robert; but we can't use that here.
- Kris; Robert, keep us posted on what you're trying and what's working; I'm leery of making changes to the spec just in order to enable PDF publication of the spec.
- Robert; I'm just pointing up a hole in the keys content in spec; this is ambiguous.
- First spec review (Eberlein & Anderson)
no update.
- Transformation utilities and DITA 1.3 grammar files
no update

2. On-going item: DITA 1.3 webinar, jointly sponsored by DITA TC and DITA Adoption TC

https://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/dita/201406/msg00010.html (Hackos, forwarded by Eberlein to DITA TC, 3 June 2014)
https://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/dita/201406/msg00015.html (3 June minutes)
Kris; we're now looking at a different date; it should be July 31st. noon-1:30pm EDT.
- Joann; You and I need to work on a blurb to be sent out as an announcement.
- Kris; we need to put together an OASIS-branded slide deck.
- Joann; I have one.
- Kris; Please send it to me; I'll check to see if it's the same as the one I already have; any thoughts on how to make it a successful webinar?
- Nancy; massive publicity :-)
- Kris; we need to come up with a blurb, and to advertise the h--- our ot it.
