A rebuild (rpm -ba ...) and a reinstall did the trick. Hmmm, OK, you are saying that pdfTeX can handle PDF OK, but I just checked the DocBook 4.1 DTD (dbnotn.mod) and it does not appear to accept PDF as an input type ...
