Use chunk.xsl stylesheet instead of docbook.xsl, ie.

xalan -IN your_docbook_source.xml -XSL /path/to/xsl/html/chunk.xsl

BTW: Xalan works OK with DocBook but it's quite slow when compared with
Saxon or xsltproc.
