Let's say it's a non-feature (and hence the name is not wisely chosen). I didn't tried to implement $XML_CATALOG_FILES handling as a list. I agree it's a bit confusing because xmllint and xsltproc handling of $SGML_CATALOG_FILES does use a list (blank or column separated). Implementing list handling for $XML_CATALOG_FILES would make sense, it's "just" a matter of coding :-) , the good point being that this should not break the existing working behaviour.
