I presume you mean the email tag?
Are you using DSSSL stylesheets?

In XSL:

<email>bobs@caldera.com</email>

is rendered as an active link:

<tt>&lt;<a href="mailto:bobs@caldera.com">bobs@caldera.com</a>&gt;</tt>
