Your options are:
	-manual (i.e. retype the documents, hopefully using an xml editor and not
notepad!)
	-automated (i.e use a conversion tool, see below)
	-combination of manual vs. automated - use a conversion tool to do 80% and
then manually edit / debug.

What formats are the documents in?   How many documents are you talking
about?  Are you only converting to docbook or to other formats as well? All
of these questions are important when you decide which way to go and which
tools are relevant to your particular scenario.

There are some other utilities out there that focus on one of these source
formats and perhaps a specific target format (there are some for RTF to
docbook, for example, there are some for tex to docbook, XSL for XHTML to
docbook etc.).    You can search the archives of this list for some of these
names/links.

Our company (www.xzytechnologies) has a tool that's almost released that
lets you convert PDF files, Word documents, and HTML documents into DocBook
and other XML formats. It also includes a debugging interface to see what
converted right and what didn't and helps you to clean up afterwards.
