Hm, what can I say: works for me.  My versions are

ii  aspell         0.50.4.1-1     GNU Aspell spell-checker
ii  aspell-en      0.51-0-4       English dictionary for GNU Aspell
ii  emacs21        21.3+1-4       The GNU Emacs editor
ii  nxml-mode      20031031-1     Emacs mode for editing XML documents

on Debian unstable.  During spell checking, the process is

  903 ?        S      0:02 /usr/bin/aspell -a -m -B --mode=sgml
