Part 1 gives a brief introduction into some relevant tools which helped me a lot. The other parts might as well help you getting started with your tool chain and stylesheets. Then there's "Docbook: The Definitive Guide" written by Norman Walsh and Leonard Muellner which gives you a complete reference to docbook [2]. The FO Parameter Reference is also very helpful [3]. Then of course there's this list and it's archive which is an unlimited source of knowledge, help and advise [4]. I would not have been able to get started with DocBook XML so quickly wihtout this list. Speaking of advise: I'd suggest to use XML catalogs rather then using a file reference to the DTD. XML catalogs make "XML setup more portable and more flexible". The general idea is to use an special file where generic addresses are mapped to local directories on your machine. Such a catalog can be used to locate the DTD, the stylesheet, system entities, you name it while processing your XML files.
