Well, then I'm out of ideas :( I tested your case with the latest xsltproc and can't reproduce it. Might it be that you're using an older version of xlstproc/libxslt/libxml? What you're saying is that if you look at the generated HTML, you don't see this: <tt class="classname">STANDARD-OBJECT</tt></a> <a href="/Body/syscla_function.html" target="_top"><tt class="classname">FUNCTION</tt></a> ^ That is, no space after the closig "</a>" tag and the next <a href...>, right? When I test with the latest xsltproc, I get a space there...
