Sounds reasonable to me. Whether it's worth the effort or not, I
can't say. If the book is building now without problems, then why
do you want to mess around with it? :-)

If by "hacks" you mean "implements", then, as far as standalone
apps, I know there's also XIncluder[1]. And there's a list of
implementations[2] that was probably fairly complete at one time
but probably isn't now. Meaning that there are more now,
especially ones integrated into other apps (as opposed to standalone).
