WOOO HOOO!!!  It works.

This is in my userconfig.xml file for FOP:

 <font metrics-file="$FULLPATH/arialuni.xml" kerning="yes"
embed-file="$FULLPATH/ARIALUNI.TTF">
    <font-triplet name="ArialUnicodeMS" style="normal" weight="normal"/>
 </font>

This is my customization layer:
