Well if you know at least little of TeX, you can write equations using TeX syntax and then use db2latex (http://db2latex.sf.net) to get LaTeX from your DocBook files. For displaying these equations on web, you can use jsMath (http://www.math.union.edu/~dpvc/jsMath/welcome.html) -- it depends on JavaScript but produces very competetive results. There are also tools that can convert MathML into SVG images. Any decent FO processor is able to process SVG.
