I tried it with this very basic customisation layer, which only
sets that variable:

  <xsl:param name="insert.xref.page.number">yes</xsl:param>

</xsl:stylesheet>

When I use the above, I get the following reference style:

Clicking the Add New Term button will add a private term instead. 
Adding private terms is described in the section called "Adding 
Private Terms" [].

When I use the value "no" instead, I get:
Clicking the Add New Term button will add a private term instead. 
Adding private terms is described in the section called "Adding 
Private Terms".
