Sorry I let this languish, but I've been busy in another part of my
app.  I am using a customization layer, and I'm also using chunking.
My problem with XHTML was my SAXParser wasn't preserving whitespace so
it was inserting extra newlines that weren't in the original doc book
formating.  So mystery solved.
