Of course, it depends on citation style your prefer. It is very common
to have citation marked by abbreviation composed from author name and
year of publication, like [Kosek2005] or [Ko05]. It is easier to assign
such identifier to biblioentry using <abbrev> element and then reference
it using <citation> then using other ways.
Of couse you can manage parallel real IDs which are assigned using
<biblioentry id="..."/> and then referenced using biblioref or xref. But
having two identifiers is silly and hard to maintain, and using
abbreviations like Kosek2005 for IDs of biblioentries is not always
good. In large documents it is quite usual to have some naming policy
for IDs, like tables are prefixed by tab., chapters by ch. and
biblioentries by bib and simple bibliography abbreviation doesn't fit
into this schema.
