The absolute path is probably the wrong approach. It would have to be the absolute path from the point of view of the web server you want to ultimately host the HTML files, which is almost certainly not the same absolute path as the machine on which you build the HTML files.

It's hard to diagnose without knowing your directory structure. Your build script might have to copy the image files from your XML source directory to the HTML output directory -- copying in a way that preserves the same relative paths at both build time and HTML-viewing time.
