If you are using DocBook 5, then the annotation element is useful for such purposes, although remark is simpler and still available. Annotations are not output by default, so some customization is required. See: http://www.docbook.org/tdg5/en/html/annotation.html and http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/CustomDb5Xsl.html#AnnotationCustomization If you are using DocBook4, then remark can be used, with the stylesheet parameter show.comments set to 1 to display them (that is the default) or 0 to turn them off.
