Robert,

You hit on an interesting point. Hacking the DocBook stylesheets to not wrap the contents of a listitem would be, as far as I can tell, difficult, and require a lot of nasty hacking. 

Also, since it's a hack to overcome what I would call a bug in one output device, I wouldn't want to clutter up the standard stylesheets with that hack. 

My plan is to write a separate stylesheet that would be run on the XHTML (the ePub transforms create XHTML using the DocBook stylesheets, then generate the ePub from the XHTML). That stylesheet would do the cleanup in the XHTML.

Hope that makes sense; my original description probably wasn't clear enough.
