In my experience xmllint is not the best tool to validate your Docbook content. A file that validated with xmllint showed several serious errors when validated with jing.

I'm not aware of a better validation tool for older XML 4, other people may be more familiar with that subject. But I wouldn't be so quick to point the stylesheets as the problem based solely on xmllint's feedback.
