I can see that defining %mathml.hook; as "| mathml" would make a valid content model, but it seems odd that the "|" is part the model group in the <equation> definition, not part of a model group contained in %equation.content;, which is where %mathml.hook; is referenced. What about: <!ENTITY % equation.content "(alt?, (graphic+|mediaobject+%mathml.hook;))"> Will %mathml.hook; be also added to <informalequation> and <inlineequation>?
