Subject: DOCBOOK: Making references<superscript>1</superscript>

What is the right way to get autonumbered references in DocBook?
(Not even sure DocBook does autonumbering).

The idea is this:

This was stated by Someone in the late twentieth century [1].

Where -preferably- the [1] is without [] but superscripted as often
used in scientific publications.

Using: ... century <xref linkend="SomeOne99" endterm="SomeOne99.refno">.

This should do the job, but doesn't autonumber.

How should i do this?

Egon
