From dbpoolx.mod:

<!ENTITY % role.attrib
	"role		CDATA		#IMPLIED">

That is, role="" is just CDATA -- no valid values prescribed (not
enumerated and no default). So it can be anything: a single word or
character, a list of words separated by spaces or commas... whatever.
