thanks for your reply. 
I was aware of this profile.xsl but this needs some more or less
extensive editing for actually making a slides.dtd compliant document
out of it. At least, that's too extensive for my current knowledge of
xslt. 

Basically, what one would have to do is add profiling code that replaces
parts of the docbook source - the <chapter>s or <section>s for example -
with <slide> elements and then places all the marked elements
(ul="slides") inside. Or even - when the <sections> are longer -
something that that does some accounting regarding how much content is
on the current slide and starts a new one (within one section) when a
certain level of information in one slide is reached.
