Subject: image mark-up in docbook

Hi all,
I have a new users manual that I'm marking up for eventual HTML output. Using
docbook, everything is pretty straight-forward except for one nagging little
thing.

The client wants the HTML version to look as close as possible to the orginal
Framemaker v6 manual. So the document has a fairly large left-hand margin, and
in this margin they willy-nilly drop a floating image every-once-in-awhile. Most
occur next to a Procedure/step element, but sometimes in other places, like
Example/title or Example/para, etc...
These little images are mostly buttons and the like, giving the reader a visual
flow of step-by-step procedures.

I'm not sure how to put this mark-up into the XML file. I'm thinking maybe it
should be an attribute of the ajacent element (?). If so, which one should I
use? "role="?
I'm grateful for any ideas, advise or direction.

Cheers,
