Seems reasonable change for me.

I inherited this behaviour from rules for creating custom FPIs.
"Variant" was not mandatory there, so I thought that there was some
reason behind for this. If this is not the case, what about making
extension/subset/variant mandatory? Like
base_version-[subset|extension|variant] [name-[version]?]+
