Well, I don't know in what context you need regular expressions, but you 
might consider a preprocessor stylesheet written in XSLT 2.0 that is mostly 
an identity stylesheet but that handles the regular expressions.  Process 
that with Saxon 8 and then hand the result off to the DocBook stylesheets 
to be processed in Saxon 6.
