So we get one pdf with all possible variants inside. DocBook has its own way to (semantically) mark up conditional sections (see http://www.sagehill.net/docbookxsl/Profiling.html). If you customize the appropriate stylesheets you may be able to generate output with the conditionals highlighted appropriately.
