Subject: Re: Liaison ... use of CAP ... v1.2 and backwards compatibility
I'm aware of a number of private correspondence exchanges, in which some parties have suggested that the degree to which CAP v1.2 plans to break some backward compatibility with prior versions is felt to be unattractive. OASIS staff is offering no technical views about this, just passing along the issue at this time. Of course, the OASIS TC has the last word on the content of its own Committee Specification; as will the OASIS membership (by vote) on any OASIS Standard submission. It's also true, however, that OASIS, the TC and ITU hope to see the next version of CAP sent again to ITU-T for an update to ITU-T X.1303. If it's anticipated that backwards-compatibility issues will be a controversy there, the TC may wish to consider how best to adopt -- and explain -- its eventual final technical position in advance.
