I'm sensitive to the issue of adding bits and pieces. But if I must
make a hard choice between not adding anything and adding regex
support, I choose not to add anything.

Further than that, I oppose adding regex support on the basis that
it's very, very hard to specify in an implementation-independent way.
Everyone wants to use the support provided by their implementation
language of choice and those libraries are known to vary in
significant ways.
