Hi Ian,

I was wondering whether you were still interested in joining OASIS as an Associate to participate in the Forest Industries Technical Committee.  Can you please let me know?  Thank you kindly.

Regards,

Peter

Peter

I take it you are in the USA and are up rather early, or is it working rather late?! Just to note that the number should have the "0" dropped for international: +44 1236 456666.

Kind Regards

Ian

I made a mistake…that should have read “I will call +44 01236 456666 at 3pm BST (10am EDT).”

Peter

We have been involved with BSW, Tilhill and the Forestry Commission in developing e-business solutions with the eFIDS standard and have developed a stand-alone module for use with the eFIDS standard. Consequently we would be very interested in your proposals.

However we would like to know a little more on what would actually be involved, and in particular the costs.

The current standard is very difficult to work with and causes confusion. It is overly complicated and I am sure the industry would welcome anything to help!

Kind Regards

Ian

Dear Mr. Logan,

I am writing you to invite your organization to take a leadership role in an exciting and important new initiative pertaining to Forest Industry information standards.  The attached document provides an overview of this new project.

OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards) is a not-for-profit, international consortium that drives the development, convergence, and adoption of e-business standards. Members themselves set the OASIS technical agenda, using a lightweight, open process expressly designed to promote industry consensus and unite disparate efforts. The consortium produces open standards for Web services, security, e-business, and standardization efforts in the public sector and for application-specific markets. Founded in 1993, OASIS has more than 5,000 participants representing over 600 organizations and individual members in 100 countries. (http://www.oasis-open.org)

A new OASIS Forestry Industries Technical Committee is forming to:

§       Develop and maintain the specification for e-Forestry Industry Data Standards (eFIDS) and GIS Data Transfer Standard (GIS DTS)

§       Improve or extend eFIDs and GIS DTS, based both on evolving Forest Industry needs, and on opportunities to more robustly use and leverage other open standards for e-commerce

§       Define the meta data to be used by eFIDs and GIS DTS

§       Develop code lists for common use in eFIDs and GIS DTS

§       Develop implementation practices and guidance for eFIDs and GIS DTS

§       Engage with related standardization activities within OASIS and in external forums regarding the Forestry Industry

Please let me know if you are interested or have any questions.  Thank you for taking the time to read this message and for your support of global information standards.

Sincerely,

Peter Roden

OASIS Director of Technology Development
