Subject: WS infrastructure versus application
Marc Haines added the following comment to the FWSI-IMSC-Document-02.doc document in the FWSI Implementation Methodology SC Group. Currently the document does not distinguish between setting up the infrastructure for Web Services-based applications and the development of the applications themselves. The approach to infrastructure implementations and application implementation, however, can be quite different due to varying key characteristics (i.e., time horizon/durability, organizational scope, …). It may be worthwhile distinguishing infrastructure and application implementation and to make specific recommendation for each of them. The first kind, the implementation of the Web Services infrastructure, would include setting up general Web Services specific functionality such as the registry, providing the facilities to create adapters and Web Service-enable legacy applications, and basic functionalities to ensure reliable messaging. The second kind, the implementation of Web Services-based application, would include the development of applications composed of Web Services.
