The Getty Art and Architecture Thesaurus (http://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabulary/aat/index.html) has the shortest and (perhaps) least problematic definition for the term artifact (plural: artifacts), "Objects made, modified, or used by  humans."  This fits in both the archaeological and anthropological contexts, and could easily be incorporated into the base schema definition.
