MEETING DETAILS
SPECIAL EVENTS:
Robotics Showcase, Monday, all day: With speakers from major robotics companies from around the world, the Robotics Showcase will launch OMG's standards effort in robotics at the end of a day of presentations and discussion. Dr. Kazuo Tanie, President of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, will introduce the day's program and Paolo Pirjanian, Chief Scientist for Evolution Robotics, will keynote. Speakers and demonstrations from such companies as NEDO, iRobot, and mBus broaden the coverage of robotics, while OMG staff and member presentations introduce the group's technology adoption process and provide an example. A discussion by audience and panel on future directions will conclude the program.
MDA FastStart Seminar, Monday afternoon: OMG's MDA FastStart program will host a seminar on "Bringing in MDA" on Monday afternoon. Focusing on the best ways to bring MDA into an IT organization, the session will feature MDA experts who will share their experiences deploying MDA in different types of enterprises and agencies. This session is free to all, although registration is required
KBE Information Day, Wednesday, all day: On Wednesday, OMG's Manufacturing Technology and Industrial Systems (ManTIS) Domain Task Force (DTF) will host a day of presentations and discussion centering on Knowledge-Based Engineering and the KBE RFP. Following presentations from Boeing, John Deere, NASA, NIST, STEP, and others, the day concludes with a presentation on the KBE RFP and a panel discussion on the role of the proposed OMG standard in the world of KBE.
Model Integrated Computing (MIC) Focus Day, Thursday morning: The Model Integrated Computing PSIG will host a focus day Thursday morning on Aspect-Oriented Modeling. Industry and academic experience reports will be shared from Lucent, Kansas State University, Semantic Designs, Colorado Status University and Trinity College.
Using MDA Techniques for Enterprise Security Services Integration and Management, Thursday, all day: This day of presentations and panels will discuss how to use MDA to build and integrate security services into large enterprise computing infrastructure from the point of view of systems integrators, government users, and enterprises with large stationary and mobile installations. At the end of the day, attendees will discuss possible standards-setting at OMG to address the problems that they identified during the day.
OMG TUTORIAL SERIES:
"Introduction to UML 2.0" by Bran Selic, IBM Rational
Monday morning.
Formal adoption of the
first major revision of the UML standard, UML 2.0, will complete before this
meeting. This tutorial gives an overview of the most important features of UML
2.0 and the rationale behind them. Special emphasis is given to the new concepts
that enable MDA, particularly for large-scale systems.
"Overview of the Software Communications Architecture (SCA)" by
Neli Hayes, Boeing
Tuesday morning
This half-day tutorial provides an overview of the SCA-an open
architecture framework based on open and evolving commercial standards such as
CORBA, CORBAservices, CORBA Component Model, and POSIX which, using UML and XML
vocabulary, describes how hardware and software elements operate in harmony in
an SCA-compliant communication system. Starting with a brief look at the Joint
Tactical Radio System (JTRS) program mission leading to the reasons for the
creation of the SCA, this overview covers the following:
* What the SCA is, what it
is not, and what it enables,
* SCA's maturity and where it is
being used today,
*
An introduction of the SCA specification, supplements, accompanying documents,
related SCA-based documents, and available formal training, and
finally,
* An overview of the SCA core architecture rule set, including the Core Framework (CF), and the Domain Profile.
"Survey of OMG Specifications" by Dr. Jon Siegel, OMG
Tuesday afternoon
Dr. Jon Siegel, OMG's
Vice President, Technology Transfer, will present the tutorial "Survey of OMG
Specifications." Designed to familiarize attendees with the group's standards in
both modeling and middleware, this tutorial prepares both for activity at the
meeting week and for technical work back at the office. Starting with the basics
of the MetaObject Facility (MOF), Unified Modeling Language (UML), XML Metadata
Interchange (XMI), and the Common Warehouse Metamodel (CWM), the tutorial goes
on to cover the Model Driven Architecture (MDA). Then, switching to middleware,
it covers the basics of CORBA and the Object Management Architecture, and
finishes with a survey of OMG's industry-specific domain specifications.
UML CERTIFICATION EXAMINATIONS
OMG's UML Certification Examinations will be given throughout the week at a testing site near the meeting hotel. You can save 15% by using the voucher code OMGPRO when you take the examination at this or any other Bay Area testing site during the meeting week. It's a good idea to call ahead to the site you select and make an appointment; for more information, see http://www.omg.org/meetingUMLcertinfo or pick up a coupon and information sheet at the meeting.
WORK ON OMG SPECIFICATIONS
Building on weeks of work via email and teleconference, OMG members get together at five technical meetings per year to discuss and vote on new specifications as they progress through our group's adoption process. With almost 100 adoptions underway at different stages, there is always a lot happening. Members' (and especially non-submitting members') best chance to influence a new specification is in the writing of the RFP, and by commenting at the presentation of initial submissions a few meetings later. At the next stage, presentation of revised submissions, members on the voting list for a specification will decide if a submission is ready for adoption. If it is, they will vote to recommend; if not, they may extend the revised submission deadline and wait for a more suitable proposal. Eventually, when all of the issues have been worked out, the Task Force will vote to recommend adoption, starting a procession of votes which culminates in the formal adoption of the new OMG specification.
So, if you work for an OMG member company or organization, the technical meetings provide your best opportunity to influence our standards as they work their way from concept to final form. If you're interested in one or more of these specifications scheduled for discussion at our Burlingame meeting, we hope you'll register and attend.
Here's a list of the work we know about that OMG Task Forces have scheduled for this Burlingame, CA, USA meeting, based on information collected at the wrapup presentations in Washington DC and from process deadlines. Since task force plans may change, if you're interested in any work item in particular you should check for it when Task Force agendas are posted on the OMG website at www.omg.org/agendas two weeks before the meeting, or ask the chair over the Task Force email list. (If your company is an OMG member and you're not on the email list, send a request to request@omg.org and we'll add you.)
