Subject: NIEM 4.0 Beta1 Now Available for Review

Greetings, NIEM Community!

We are excited to announce that NIEM 4.0 beta1 is now available for public review and comment through April 21, 2017. Visit https://release.niem.gov/niem/4.0/ to download the full NIEM 4.0 beta1 release package. Updates to the Naming and Design Rules (NDR) can be found here: https://reference.niem.gov/niem/specification/naming-and-design-rules .

NIEM 4.0 is an upcoming Major Release that features updates to NIEM’s core, domains, and technical architecture. In addition to harmonization and issue resolutions, key highlights for this new release include:

  • A new Agriculture domain stewarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
  • Updates to existing domains, including Emergency Management; Justice; Military Operations; Surface Transportation; Biometrics; and Human Services, which has fully integrated content from the Children, Youth, and Family Services domain
  • Results from a review of international models, exchanges, and standards to identify unique international elements for inclusion in NIEM core and domains – more to come in 4.0 incremental releases
  • Increased support for Geopolitical Entitles, Names, and Codes (GENC) country and state codes using the new NIEM Code Lists Specification
  • Addition of Legal Entity Identifier, an alpha-numeric code that uniquely identifies legally distinct entities that engage in financial transactions
  • Updates to the technical architecture to support linked data methodology, relax rules for extension schemas, simplify IEPDs, and allow for more flexibility in XSDs
