Subject: Message-digests will protect Rwandan genocide trial interviews
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/27/science/27arch.html?_r=1 "On Tuesday a group of researchers at the University of Washington are releasing the initial component of a public system to provide authentication for an archive of video interviews with the prosecutors and other members of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Rwandan genocide. The group will also release the first portion of the Rwandan archive." --------- I haven't had a chance to review how they're protecting the hashes, but will report back as I learn more. If anyone knows more about this, the information would be welcome. As an aside, the OASIS LegalXML eNotarization Technical Committee has just completed the specification of a protocol called the "eNotarization Markup Language (ENML)" that has the potential to play an important role in preserving digital evidence. While ENML (pronounced "enamel") also uses SHA-2 message-digests, it adds the additional protection of symmetric or asymmetric cryptographic key encryption to protect the hash. The ENML specification should be available for public comment in a few weeks; the DRAFT (version 2.2) however, can be found here: http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/documents.php?wg_abbrev=legalxml-enotary Arshad Noor StrongAuth, Inc.
