CONSORTIUM ANNOUNCEMENTS
------------------------

OASIS is hosting the Standards Registry committee, chaired by Karl Best.
The ad hoc industry committee will define a standards metadata that can
be used by all standards organizations to define their work. This will
allow broader access to standards information, resulting in increased
cooperation between standards groups, broader input to standards
development, and increased adoption of the completed work. For more
information see the committee's web page at www.oasis-open.org/stdsreg

OASIS today announced we have entered into a liaison relationship with
ISO/IEC Joint TC on Information Technology. The relationship will allow
representatives from each organization to participate in the standards
development work of the other. ISO/IEC JTC1/SC34, the subcommittee for
Document Description and Processing Languages, has joined OASIS as a
contributor, and OASIS has become an ISO/IEC Category A Liaison member.

On 13 Feb, OASIS announced the expansion of our topic maps development
with the formation of two new TCs. The OASIS Vocabulary for XML
Standards and Technologies (XMLvoc) TC will define the essential
subjects needed to create interchangeable ontologies for the XML domain.
The OASIS Published Subjects for Geography and Languages (GeoLang) TC

OASIS Seeks Members for New Technical Advisory Board

The Consortium is forming the OASIS Technical Advisory Board, an elected
group of industry experts who will provide input to the OASIS Board of
Directors on technical topics meriting member consideration. The OASIS
Technical Advisory Board will offer guidance on issues related to
strategy, process, interoperability, and scope. They will support the
growth of technical work within OASIS by identifying topics for
standardization that will be beneficial for the industry and will
recommend areas of
collaboration within and between OASIS TCs. All member companies are
strongly encouraged to nominate representatives for the OASIS Technical
Advisory Board. Applications for the OASIS Technical Advisory Board
should be submitted to nominations@oasis-open.org on or before 29 March.

-----------------
CONSORTIUM UPDATE
-----------------

The recognition and stature of OASIS within the Standards Development
Organization (SDO) environment has been greatly enhanced as a result of
OASIS joining the MoU Management Group,
http://www.oasis-open.org/news/oasis_news_02_11_02.shtml. The OASIS
President & CEO, Patrick Gannon, was in Geneva at the time of the
announcement and was able to meet with the heads of three of the MoU
organizations.

Mr. Gannon met with Dr. Lawrence Eicher, Secretary-General, ISO and
members
of his staff. As OASIS is now part of the MOU on E-business, and as part
of
this collaboration, OASIS now qualifies for Category A liaisons with the
ISO
Technical Committees (TCs) or Sub Committees (SCs) covered by the MoU.
This
allows OASIS to propose any specifications or standards for
approval/publication in ISO using the so called "fast track process"
http://www.oasis-open.org/news/oasis_news_02_25_02.shtml

Mr. Gannon met with Houlin Zhao, Director, Telecommunication
Standardization
Bureau, ITU and members of his staff. Mr. Zhao was quite pleased to
have
the E-Business MoU as a framework for closer cooperation with OASIS. As
a
result of the meeting, OASIS was invited to provide a speaker for the
ITU
Security Workshop in Seoul, Korea in May to highlight the OASIS TC work
in
the security arena. Phillip Griffin, Chair of the new OASIS XML Common
Biometric Format Technical Committee (XCBF TC) will be speaking.

Mr. Gannon met with Paolo Garonna, Executive Secretary, and members of
his
staff. Mr. Garonna expressed his support for OASIS joining the
E-Business
MoU and identified some areas that OASIS may be able to work with UNECE
and
the entire UN organization beyond the work begun over 2 years ago with
UN/CEFACT on ebXML. He specifically highlighted the planned World
Summit on
Information Society (WSIS) which will be hosted in Geneva in December
2003
with UNECE and ITU acting as lead organizations. There is a planning
committee that has invited NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations), to
which
they expect to invite OASIS to participate. Leading up to the December
2003
event will be a series of UN/ITU sponsored regional workshops which
OASIS
and its members may be able to assist.

During the same trip, Mr. Gannon was a moderator and speaker at UNECE
E-Regulatory Workshop where he was able to meet with representatives of
many of the other international organizations that have an interest in
E-Business and other work being done at OASIS. These contacts included:
European Commission (work on ODR, DRM and other compliance projects),
Organization
for Economic Co-Operation & Development (OECD), World Intellectual
Property
Organization (WIPO), International Trade Center (ITC), UN Commission on
International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), Association of European Chambers of
Commerce and Industry (Eurochambres).
