Subject: new OASIS discussion list: music notation

Upon the request by three eligible participants, I have created an OASIS
Discussion List for the purpose of discussing the possible creation of
one or more OASIS Technical Committees related to music notation.
Discussion on the list will begin in seven days, and the list and its
archive will be deleted after 90 days. One or more TCs may or may not be
formed as a result of this discussion.

The participants in the discussion list should decide if there is
sufficient interest to form an OASIS TC, write a proposal to start the
TC (including the TC charter), and select a TC chair.

The discussion list has been proposed by the following members of OASIS:

Matthew J. Dovey (matthew.dovey@oucs.ox.ac.uk), individual member
   Michael Good, (good@recordare.com) Recordare LLC
   Donald Byrd, (donbyrd@indiana.edu) Indiana University

The discussion leader will be Matthew J. Dovey.

In order to participate in this discussion you should subscribe to the
"music-notation-discuss" discussion list by sending a message to
music-notation-discuss-subscribe@lists.oasis-open.org. OASIS membership
is not required in order to subscribe to this list. If you do not wish
to subscribe but wish to view the discussion you may view the list
archives at http://lists.oasis-open.org/archives/music-notation-discuss

Strawman Statement of TC Purpose:

The purpose of the Music Notation XML TC would be to develop a standard
XML format for common Western musical notation. Whilst there are clearly
a number of applications for such an XML standard, this TC will
initially focus on an XML standard to serve as an interchange format for
score writing, music notation editing, and music publishing products.

Many music notation products are already using XML for either
interchange or native data storage. For example, interchange between
Sibelius and Finale can be done using the MusicXML format. A major goal
of the TC will be to minimize migration issues for existing music
applications moving to an OASIS music notation standard.

The TC expects to receive existing music notation XML applications such
as MusicXML and MEI as contributions to its work. These applications
date back to 2000 and reflect the DTD technology of the time. The work
of the TC may include modernizing current applications to improve
support for schemas, namespaces, and other W3C and OASIS standards.

Eligible Persons wishing to create the discussion list:

   Michael Good, (good@recordare.com) Recordare LLC
   Donald Byrd, (donbyrd@indiana.edu) Indiana University

Discussion leader:
   Matthew J. Dovey
