Subject: NIST Interoperability Report Now Available

Last year, the Building and Fire Research Laboratory and the Advanced Technology Program at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) commissioned a study to identify and estimate the efficiency losses in the U.S. capital facilities industry resulting from inadequate interoperability among computer-aided design, engineering, and software systems. Although the focus of the study was on capital facilities-commercial/institutional buildings and industrial facilities-it was intended to benefit key stakeholders throughout the construction industry.

The final report of this study, prepared for NIST by RTI International and the Logistic Management Institute, estimates the cost of inadequate interoperability in the U.S. capital facilities industry to be $15.8 billion per year.

The intended audiences of this report are owners and operators of capital facilities; design, construction, operation and maintenance, and other providers of professional services in the capital facilities industry; and public- and private-sector research organizations engaged in developing interoperability solutions.

I am happy to announce that the 200+ page final report, entitled "Cost Analysis of Inadequate Interoperability in the U.S. Capital Facilities Industry," has received NIST Editorial Review Board approval as NIST GCR 04-867 and is now available for immediate downloading in pdf format from the NIST website:
